Things went horribly wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a spoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the sting of this disaster.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
That's So Cringe, It's Hilarious (In a Way)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer level of chaos and just resigns itself to fate, opting for laughter as a coping strategy.
But then, you remember that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just Very bad plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a sigh.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You start ruminating about the meaning of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The volcanic eruption struck with devastating force, consuming entire villages in its path. Buildings crumbled like house of cards, and the roar that followed was deafening. Thousands were buried beneath debris, their fate uncertain. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, forcing survivors to confront a future forever scarred.

Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a case of bedhead hair. I couldn't do it to look right. As I was dashing out the door, I stumbled and with a thud all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was extremely running behind for work.
I panting. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was even worse. Everything. I get anything done.
By the time I reached my destination, I was exhausted. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
